Building confidence in VET Practice: 4th Annual Conference on VET Teaching and VET Teacher Education
An afternoon of practitioner-led workshops on Thursday, 6 December 2018, 1.30pm-5pm
(Martin Probst’s workshop is from 3.10 - 5.00pm)
Confident conflict management in the classroom and beyond.
Presenter’s name: Martin Probst, Chief Education Officer, PROfound Leadership.
Workshop Outline: This workshop is designed to equip VET teachers with a deep understanding of what is really driving conflict and how to achieve positive outcomes when dealing with students or colleagues.
Positive relationships and a safe environment are not only essential for the success of the students, but equally important for teachers. A range of conflicts can easily interrupt all of this. VET teaching staff are under increasing pressure to not merely provide students with academic support, but also to provide guidance in other areas. This might be especially difficult when dealing with students who display undesirable, disruptive and disrespectful behaviours. Here is the upside: there are well-tested strategies we can learn to apply so that conflicts can be identified, dealt with and resolved quickly.
This workshop is for all those who regularly face conflict and wish they knew how to handle these situations better and more constructively.
Interactive group discussions will provide participating teachers with the opportunity to:
- raise examples of common conflict situations in VET education so these can be discussed, and solutions explored collaboratively
- learn how to secure productive learning outcomes from conflict situations and introduce a calm classroom environment
- acquire the know-how to manage conflict with understanding, skill and confidence to move students from undesirable behaviours to integrated class participation
Participating teachers will come away with effective conflict resolution techniques and communication skills to manage student conflict with confidence and turn dysfunctional classroom situations into productive learning outcomes.
Length of session: 110 minutes.
This workshop is offered as part of the 2018 ACDEVEG Conference in Melbourne.
