The discomfort of growth or the pain of regret?

3 leadership insights to choose the discomfort that leads to success.

Have you ever avoided a difficult conversation because you didn’t want to upset someone? Perhaps you convinced yourself it wasn’t the right time, the issue might resolve itself, or keeping the peace was more important. But weeks later, the problem remains. Frustration has grown, relationships are strained, and the conversation has become even more uncomfortable. Sound familiar?

As leaders, we face these choices regularly. We postpone decisions, avoid difficult conversations or resist change because stepping outside our comfort zone feels challenging. Meanwhile, we’re surrounded by messages telling us to be happy, think positively and live our best lives. But expecting to feel happy all the time is unrealistic and, quite frankly, exhausting.

Life naturally includes uncertainty, frustration, disappointment and difficult decisions. These experiences don’t mean something is wrong. They’re part of being human. Yet when happiness becomes a constant expectation, we start questioning ourselves. Why aren’t we happier? Why does everyone else seem to have everything under control? We may suppress uncomfortable feelings or feel guilty when life doesn’t match the positive picture we’re encouraged to present.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Avoiding discomfort doesn’t necessarily make life easier. Sometimes, it simply exchanges one form of discomfort for another. We can experience the discomfort of learning and growing, or the frustration and regret of staying where we are. Rather than eliminating uncomfortable feelings, we need to understand them and choose how to respond constructively.

As I often remind leaders: “Choose the discomfort that leads somewhere.”

In this article, we’ll explore three leadership insights to help you embrace growth, recognise the cost of staying comfortable and make more meaningful choices about where to invest your energy and courage.

Leadership insight #1: Choose the discomfort of growth

Growth rarely happens when everything feels comfortable. Think about the last time you stepped into a new leadership role, delivered a presentation, had a courageous conversation or learnt to delegate responsibilities.

Chances are, you experienced uncertainty, self-doubt or even fear. That’s because growth often requires us to move beyond what’s familiar.

Consider a leader who’s always had all the answers. As their responsibilities grow, they need to ask more questions, empower others and allow their team to make decisions. This can feel uncomfortable, especially when they’re used to being in control. Yet holding on to everything limits both their own growth and their team’s performance.

Just as physical exercise challenges our muscles, personal and professional growth challenges our beliefs, habits and capabilities. Feeling uncomfortable doesn’t necessarily mean you’re moving in the wrong direction. You may simply have entered your learning zone.

However, there’s a difference between healthy discomfort and overwhelming pressure. Growth shouldn’t come at the expense of our wellbeing. The aim is to stretch ourselves, not break ourselves.

5 practical tips for leaders
  1. Recognise your learning zone. Notice when discomfort comes from doing something unfamiliar rather than something genuinely unsafe.
  2. Start before you feel completely ready. Confidence often develops through action, not before it.
  3. Replace perfection with progress. Give yourself permission to experiment, learn and make mistakes.
  4. Seek constructive feedback. Treat feedback as information for growth rather than a judgement of your worth.
  5. Take manageable steps. Challenge yourself without pushing into unnecessary overwhelm.

Your reflection: What have you been putting off because it feels uncomfortable, even though you know it could help you grow?

Leadership insight #2: Recognise the hidden cost of staying comfortable

Avoiding discomfort today can create bigger problems tomorrow. Staying within our comfort zone often feels safer because we know what to expect. But there’s a hidden cost: Avoiding discomfort doesn’t necessarily remove the problem. More often, it simply postpones it.

Imagine a leader who notices a team member’s declining performance but avoids addressing it for fear of damaging the relationship. Initially, this feels easier. However, the behaviour continues, colleagues become frustrated, standards slip and resentment grows. Eventually, the situation becomes far more difficult to resolve.

The same happens when we resist change, postpone decisions or continue doing things simply because we’ve always done them that way. Over time, this can lead to missed opportunities, declining motivation and damaged relationships. The discomfort of growth is often immediate, while the cost of staying the same develops quietly until it becomes impossible to ignore.

However, comfort itself isn’t the enemy. We all need stability, rest and recovery to perform sustainably. The problem arises when comfort becomes an excuse to avoid necessary action or growth. What feels safe today can become the reason we feel stuck tomorrow.

5 practical tips for leaders
  1. Identify recurring frustrations. Ask yourself whether a problem continues because you’ve been avoiding action.
  2. Consider the long-term cost. What might happen if nothing changes over the next three, six or twelve months?
  3. Challenge familiar excuses. Notice statements such as “Now isn’t the right time” or “That’s how we’ve always done it”.
  4. Address small issues early. A timely conversation can prevent a much larger problem later.
  5. Choose progress over temporary relief. Focus on what will improve the situation rather than simply what feels easiest right now.

Your reflection: What is the potential cost of continuing to avoid something you already know needs your attention?

Leadership insight #3: Choose meaningful discomfort over constant happiness

A fulfilling life isn’t always comfortable. We’re constantly encouraged to be happy, positive and successful, while social media suggests everyone else has everything under control. But here’s the reality: Happiness isn’t supposed to be a full-time job. Uncertainty, frustration and disappointment are simply part of being human.

The same applies to leadership. Making unpopular decisions, setting boundaries, providing honest feedback or admitting we don’t have all the answers may feel uncomfortable. Yet these actions can strengthen trust, relationships, performance and wellbeing.

Consider a leader who values fairness but avoids addressing poor performance. While the conversation may be uncomfortable, avoiding it could be unfair to the rest of the team. Similarly, setting boundaries might feel difficult but can prevent exhaustion and resentment.

The goal isn’t to eliminate discomfort, but to choose challenges that serve a meaningful purpose. Not every struggle is worthwhile. There’s a difference between developing resilience and tolerating unreasonable demands, challenging yourself and pushing beyond your limits, or taking responsibility and carrying someone else’s.

Purposeful discomfort helps us grow, protect what matters and achieve meaningful goals. Unnecessary suffering simply drains us. So, instead of asking, “How can I feel happier?”, perhaps a better question is: “What matters enough to me that I’m willing to experience some discomfort for it?”

5 practical tips for leaders
  1. Get clear on what matters. Identify the values, relationships and outcomes worth making an effort for.
  2. Question the purpose of your discomfort. Is this challenge helping you grow, protect something important or achieve a meaningful outcome?
  3. Accept difficult emotions without judgement. Frustration, uncertainty and disappointment are normal human experiences.
  4. Protect your wellbeing. Recognise when discomfort has shifted from healthy challenge to harmful stress.
  5. Celebrate meaningful progress. Measure success by growth, contribution and alignment with your values, not simply how happy you feel.

Your reflection: What matters enough to you that you’re willing to experience some discomfort to achieve or protect it?

Before you go…

Remember, discomfort is an unavoidable part of life and leadership, but how we respond to it is often a choice. Growth requires us to move beyond what feels familiar, while avoiding necessary change can create bigger challenges and future regret. The key is to choose discomfort that serves a meaningful purpose, rather than simply chasing happiness or staying where we feel safe.

Of course, this doesn’t mean pushing through everything alone. Leadership can be demanding, and sometimes the most courageous step is asking for support, setting a healthy boundary or giving yourself permission to rest and recover. A trusted colleague, mentor or coach can help you gain perspective and find a practical way forward.

So, here’s my challenge to you: Think about something you’ve been avoiding and ask yourself:

  • What discomfort am I currently avoiding?
  • What might continuing to avoid it eventually cost me?
  • What’s one small step I can take this week?

You don’t need to change everything overnight. Sometimes meaningful growth begins with one courageous conversation, one important decision or one small action.

Remember, the question isn’t whether you’ll experience discomfort, but whether it’s helping you grow or keeping you stuck.

Choose the discomfort that leads somewhere, rather than living with the regret of never trying.
