3 simple strategies to shaping a workshop facilitator’s reality.

The ability to focus isn’t just helpful - it’s life-changing for workshop facilitators. Today, with so many distractions, focusing is a key skill. Whether you’re planning workshops, managing your workload, or solving problems, focus can help you grow both personally and professionally.

I remember a time when I was consumed by what I thought was lacking in my life and work. I was constantly focused on the missing pieces of the puzzle, feeling dissatisfied, frustrated and inadequate. Things only changed when I decided to focus on what I did have and started being thankful for it.

A quote from Oprah Winfrey helped me see things clearly:

“Be thankful for what you have, and you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

Her words reminded me that what we focus on shapes our thoughts and our reality.

Imagine this simple scenario: two people have a cake in front of them:

  • One person feels sad because they see a missing slice and focus on what’s gone and dwell on what they lack.
  • The other person feels happy because they focus on the one slice of cake they have. They embody the mindset of gratitude and appreciation.

The difference is focus. One person sees scarcity, and the other sees abundance.

This lesson is especially helpful for workshop facilitators. Your focus affects not just your own success but also how your participants experience your workshops. Let’s explore 3 simple strategies to use focus to improve your skills and deliver better workshops.

Strategy 1: Cultivate gratitude

Gratitude means being thankful for what you have. It’s more than just feeling good - it can change the way you think. When facilitators show gratitude, they inspire others to do the same.

For example, start your workshop with a gratitude activity. Ask participants to share one thing they’re thankful for. This creates a positive atmosphere  where everyone feel connected and valued. When you practise gratitude often, it brings clarity and helps you feel more satisfied with your journey as a facilitator.

Strategy 2: Prioritise what matters most

In a world full of distractions, it’s easy to lose track of what’s important. As a facilitator, focusing on what matters most can make your work more effective. This might mean planning your content, engaging with participants, or improving your delivery.

Start by asking yourself what you want to achieve in a session, and which activities will be the most valuable for participants. Once you’re clear on your goals, remove distractions and put your energy into what matters most. This way, you stay focused and bring more value to your workshops.

Strategy 3: Lead by Example

As a facilitator, you set the tone for focus and positivity. Your actions can motivate others to do the same. Stay calm during challenges, maintain a positive attitude, and celebrate small wins with your group.

For example, if a discussion goes off track during a workshop, gently guide it back to the main point. This shows participants the value of staying focused. When you lead by example, you create a positive and productive atmosphere. Also, take time to acknowledge the efforts of your participants. Even small gestures, like thanking someone for their input, can show the importance of focus and appreciation in working together.

Small steps create a big impact

Incorporating these principles into my facilitation approach has transformed my professional life, and it can do the same for you. Focus isn’t about being perfect - it’s about making progress. Whether you’re practising gratitude, prioritising what matters, or leading by example, every small step helps you create a bigger impact on your business, your workshop participants, and even your personal connections.

Think about how focus has shaped your journey so far. What can you do today to align your focus with your goals? Remember: where you focus goes, your energy flows. Choose to focus on abundance, gratitude, and the limitless opportunities ahead.
